Eat More Cherries!

There are all kinds of reasons why you should eat more cherries. The most important is your health!

It's nothing new to hear that in order to stay healthy and trim, you need to eat more fruits and vegetables. So it shouldn't be any surprise to hear that cherries are good for you. How good are they? Some consider this sweet and sometimes sour fruit to be one of the healthiest foods that you could possibly eat! They are fat-free; low in calories; packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, melatonin, and other beneficial enzymes; and look great on top of whipped cream.

Ready to learn more about this gorgeous fruit? You've come to the right place.

Neither give cherries to pigs nor advice to a fool."
- Old Irish Saying

The Basics

Cherries are in the same fruit family as apricots, peaches, and plums, and come in two varieties. Depending on your taste buds, you will either prefer the wild, sweet cherries that are grown mainly in Michigan and on the east coast or the sour cherries grown in Michigan and the Pacific Northwest. Both are harvested during the summer months and only provide a small window for growth and harvesting. Additionally, both types can be prepared and consumed however you like, whether cooked, raw, canned, dried, or in juice.

When it comes down to what is inside of cherries, you can rest assured that every bite or sip is full of vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin B, and the mineral potassium. So with a handful of cherries, you give your immune system, heart, and eyes a healthy boost (a few of vitamin C's benefits); promote healthy cell metabolism and cell growth, while helping your body maintain its muscle tone and gorgeous skin (courtesy of vitamin B); and ensure the proper functioning of your kidneys, heart, muscles, nervous and digestive systems (thanks to potassium).

Even More Cherry-Colored Benefits

Just like most fruits, cherries - especially the dark red, tart variety - are full of antioxidants. And in case you've not heard, antioxidants play a key role in your ability to fend off three of your most dreaded foes: heart disease, cancer, and aging. Prefer getting your antioxidants via blueberries? Would you change your mind if you learned that tart cherry juice and dried cherries have more antioxidants than blueberries? Less concerned with long-term benefits and want something to help you right now? You may be interested to learn that 20 tart cherries contain the same amount of pain relief that is found in ibuprofen or aspirin.

It has also been found that the enzymes found in cherries provide a number of perks. They ease the symptoms of arthritis and gout by reducing the amounts of uric acid circulating in the body, and if you drink the juice from Montmorency cherries, your muscles will be given the power to recover faster from strength-training sessions or other strenuous physical exercises.

Sleep and Live Better

Having trouble sleeping? Cherry time! It has been discovered that tart cherries contain a high amount of melatonin. A hormone that is produced naturally by the body, melatonin helps regulate sleep and slows the process of aging. So if you've been having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, try some cherry juice before bed!

In the event you're still not convinced that cherries are a must have in your diet, here are a couple more cherry-tastic benefits that researchers have discovered. Eat more cherries and you may be able to better manage your diabetes, lower high blood sugar levels, reduce your risk of colon cancer, lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol, and prevent dementia.

Back To Basics: Best Leg Exercise

Squats, Squats and Squats.

Ready to get those legs into better shape than they've ever been in? Then you're going to have to give up some of your treadmill time and trade it in for some squat-tastic exercises.

Purpose

At the core of squats is strengthening your leg muscles. Specifically, squats strengthen your quadriceps and your hamstrings. By giving these muscles an extra helping of strength, you strengthen the muscles that support your knees, ultimately helping your knees avoid injury. Strong knees help you avoid injury during your daily routine, as well as on the athletic field. As squats also require you to maintain good balance, you'll also give your core a bit of a workout, while increasing your flexibility at the same time. Because of all these benefits, many consider squats to be one of the most useful and necessary pieces of any weight-lifting puzzle.

Wow, what a great birthday!

BirthdayHi there , I celebrated my 35th birthday with my fiance! Here I am with my fiance Allianca at the Habour Steak House where we had dinner! Okay, so here is the rundown of my entire awesome day! I was awoken with two big bags. One contained two pairs of stylish sandals and a pair of Nike Free Run Shoes!

Then, the other bag had the Ipad 2, (well it actually had a stylish case in the bag and we went to pick up the Ipad together at the Apple store as she said she got confused by all the different types of Ipads there was too chose from...lol) I was really loving my gifts at this point!

I was then quickly rushed off to Country Boy one of my favourite breakfast joints in KW and we then drove to Toronto to check in to another one of my favourites, The Metropolitan Hotel.

We had luch on the patio at the Milestones restaurant, dinner at the Harbour Steak House and then back to our room where I was surprised by friends for drinks.

So as you could see I had a pretty eventful and fun filled day thanks to my sweetheart!
I'll post a few pics on Facebook later!

Make it a great day!

Will Protein make you skinny?

The true benefits of protein are vague. It’s hard for the experts
to say much about protein because there have not been adequate
studies on protein to truly say one way or the other how to
effectively account for protein in your diet. Studies at Harvard
have not pinpointed absolute fact when it comes to protein.

Although the cloudiness of the benefits of protein, it is
recommended that you take in nine grams of protein for every
20 pounds of body weight.

Couple things you need to look out for however…
Lack of protein can cause growth failure, loss of muscle mass,
decreased immunity, weakening of the heart and respiratory
system.

Too much protein can lead to bone loss over longer periods
of time. Because digesting protein takes lots of calcium,
your body may take calcium from bones and leave them
starved.

So drink lots of milk along with that new diet!

Are You a YO-YO?

If you have had bouts with dieting in the
past, chances are you have found your way
onto the “YO-YO” Diet. You won’t see
any advertisements for it, you won’t find
any books on it, and you won’t find anything
on the internet about it. But trust me, it
definitely exists.

The “YO-YO” diet usually takes place
when you come off your diet and you go right
back to the original weight you were at
before you started that diet. Hence the
“YO-YO” effect. You lose 20 or 30 pounds
just to put it back on and even more sometimes.

So how can you stay off the “YO-YO”
diet? Easy. Just don’t go on a “Diet”.
Change your diet.

Change what your eating everyday. Change
your shopping list to cater to healthy eating.
Instead of buying donuts buy apples. Instead
of buying a 12 pack of soda, buy a 12 pack
of water. And get your butt up off that couch
and get out and do something.

Make it a great day!

Insulin: Your Bodies Sugar Manager!

What does insulin have to do with my diet?

A lot actually, when you eat your sugar levels rise in your body.
Without insulin your cells don’t grab that sugar as it runs through
the blood stream. Insulin activates those cells and tells them
“hey the sugar is coming”.

Without insulin the cells don’t know to absorb the sugar in your
blood and would essentially starve.

Insulin is secreted from the pancreas and enters the blood stream,
and then the cells receive their orders to absorb sugar out of the
blood stream.

Your body wants to keep its blood sugar levels in a very specific
range. Insulin makes your cells go to work absorbing the sugar
which brings your blood sugar into a normal range. A normal
range is between 70 and 110 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood.

Most people think of diabetes when talking about insulin. Insulin
injections are required when the body does not create enough
insulin to activate the cells in your body to absorb the sugar in
your blood.

Build Muscle and Lose Weight at the Same Time!

Did you know that every ounce of muscle burns fat calories
during the day?

Here is the good news: Muscle burns 5-15 calories per pound
per day than. So what does this mean to you? What it means
is that muscle will naturally burn fat.

But building muscle is hard isn’t it?

No not really, you just have to try a little. Here is how.

Train just 2 times per week.
Take a couple times a week to work your muscle groups. It’s
easy to sleep that extra 15 minutes, but can you honestly not get
out of bed or off the couch for 15 minutes to work your muscles?

Challenge your muscles.
Easy to moderate reps are great for maintaining muscle, but the
more muscle you have the more calories your burning per day
without even thinking about it. Challenge your muscles by
using a higher weight than you usually would, make it so your
last rep makes you work for it, but is still doable.

Use compound movements.
These movements challenge several muscle groups at the same
time. Push-ups, squats, lunges are all good examples of
compound movements.

Change your program.

Your body will get used to the same routine if you do the same
thing each week. Challenge your body by changing your
workout routine each week.

You can do this, just a little ambition goes a long way. Get up and
go do it!!

Make it a great day!

This is One of the Biggest Mistakes You Can Make While Dieting!

This one thing can be the downfall of your
dieting, of it can keep you at the same weight
you are right now longer than you would like.

You go to bed, you ate dinner a few hours ago
and it has had a chance to start digesting, so it
isn’t resting on your stomach all night. You
took that brisk walk after dinner and hit the sack
ready for tomorrow.

You get up in the morning, check the computer
for emails, jump in the shower and head off to
work. Then when you get to work you eat a
donut and get a cup of coffee.

An hour later you go back for a second donut
and a refill on the coffee. You go to lunch around
noon and finish your workday with one last cup
of coffee.

So what did you miss? Breakfast!!

Eat before you leave the house and you can skip
those donuts and keep your calories down.

When you get to work park a little further from
the office than normal and walk briskly to the
office. This gets your metabolism up and burns
extra calories during the morning.

Make it a great day!

Trans fat: An invisible predator!

Have you been to the local fast food joint lately? If you have
chances are that you have brought home this ugly menace known
as trans fat.

Trans fats are unsaturated, but can still raise your bad cholesterol
while lowering your good cholesterol. Trans fats result from
adding hydrogen to vegetable oils that are used in cooking in
commercial baked goods, restaurants and fast food places.

The process changes a liquid oil, naturally high in unsaturated
fatty acids, to a more solid and more saturated form. The greater
the degree of hydrogenation, the more saturated the fat becomes.

Cookies, crackers or other commercially baked goods can be
high in trans fats. Donuts, French fries and other commercially
fried goods are also typically high in trans fats.

Recent studies suggest that these fats may raise blood
cholesterol. The fatty acid content of most margarine's and
spreads is printed on the package or label. Liquid and soft
tub margarine contain little saturated fat or trans fat.

So cut down on the French fries and crackers. You don’t
have to never eat them again, just be aware of what your
eating and adjust accordingly, your heart and belly will thank
you for it.

Make it a great day!

Maximize Motivation With Music

Feel like getting hot and sweaty with your favourite rock star? The good news is that putting him or her on your iPod will keep your motivation levels sky high while you exercise.

Experts have discovered that runners listening to tunes with beats that matched their heartbeats were distracted into working out for 15 per cent longer without even realising it or feeling any extra pain.

Good warm-up tunes are around 80-125 bpm, while for the main part of your workout you should aim at 130-150 bpm. Work out to your perfect playlist by downloading the BPM Analyzer from Mixmeister.com which is a free app that calculates the BPM of your favourite tunes in seconds.
