Don't Quit!

I just thought I would share a powerful poem that I think we all may need at some point and time in our life!

by: Unknown Author

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Stay away from alcohol. Although alcohol can make you drowsy, you won’t get a deep, restful sleep under the influence. Another great tip is to wind down before bed. Come up with a routing right before bed time. You can take a bath, listen to relaxing music or even read a book. Digestive Enzymes 101!

It's no secret that as we age it becomes harder to enjoy a meal without suffering from some type of digestive discomfort. The reason is that every 10 years of life the pancreas produces fewer digestive enzymes. In addition, our modern diets are largely void of natural plant enzymes. This overall lack of enzymes causes the body to work harder, putting a strain on our internal organs and digestive system. This results in symptoms as minor as heartburn and bloating but can lead to symptoms as major as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and malnutrition.

Multiple Approaches to Digestive Health

Protease and Peptidase help digest protein molecules. Four varieties of protease enzymes have been combined in this formula to compensate for higher protein diets.

Amylase and Alpha-Galactosidase help digest simple and complex carbohydrates and starches, i.e. pastas, breads or starchy vegetables like potatoes.

Glucoamylase, Invertase and Malt Diastase help to digest glucose and other sugars. All three enzymes are included to insure that all natural and refined sugars are completely digested. Improperly digested sugars can lead to blood sugar imbalances.

Lipase and Lipase AN help digest fats and oils. Undigested fats can cause weight gain, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Additionally, Lipase helps your body better utilize Omega fatty acids.

Cellulase and Pectinase help the body break down fiber compounds in order to reap its maximum health benefits. These two enzymes are helpful in bowel regulation.

Phytase, Hemicellulase and Xylanase specifically help with releasing fiber-bound minerals from plant sources. They have been included to aid in the digestion of herbal supplements. They are also great for vegetarian diets!

Special Enzyme Blend-a proprietary blend of protease and lactase enzymes used to further enhance the digestion of dairy products. It is included to meet the special needs of people who suffer from lactose intolerance. n·zimes PA-L™ is a proprietary enzyme blend that is included as an alternative to animal based pancreatin enzymes. It is isolated from plant sources to further increase the body's ability to metabolize proteins, carbohydrates and fats. It is ideal for diets high in saturated fats.

Don't Blame it on the Weather!

Do you find yourself burying your head under the pillow while your alarm clock cheerfully sings a happy tune? Do you lack motivation after sliding an inquisitive foot out from under the covers only to find it is cold?

STOP!

It is said that breakfast is the most important meal as it sets you up for the day ahead. But, the frame of mind you wake up in is equally important. Your frame of mind dictates how you react to outside influences, how many times have you woken up in a bad mood only to have a bad day. It may surprise you to know that you choose your own frame of mind.

If it is cold, great! You get to wrap up warm - in your favourite sweater. Cosy.

If you think you've woken up too early, fantastic! There's more of this amazing day to enjoy.

So...

Your frame of mind will invariably dictate the rest of your day. How do you go about changing it?

The only thing to remember is "There are two sides to every coin." For every negative there is always a positive, consciously seek out the good in every situation. If you do this regularly your subconscious mind will automatically seek out the good in a situation. When you are happy, things seem to go your own way - and when they don't, you are able to shrug them off with a smile.

How much better would your life be if you "changed your mind"? Well, it's your mind, you can do with it as you please.

The glass IS half full if you think it is.

Natural vs. Synthetic: Not all vitamins are the same!

There are literally thousands of vitamins and supplements available for purchase today. Each type of supplement such as calcium, ginkgo biloba or multivitamins has many brands available made in a variety of different ways. Some vitamins are derived directly from natural sources such as oranges, oils, plants and vegetables. And for each vitamin available naturally, there is a vitamin pill available too. Although the vitamin supplements claim to be the same, you may not be getting the amount of nutrients that you imagine you are getting. It's not to say that synthetic vitamins are inferior to their natural supplements, but it's important you the differences. Another important consideration is the fillers used in vitamin supplement pills. Some brands contain extra substances that you really don't need any may actually cause you more harm than good.

Natural vitamin sources

Natural vitamins sources are those that your body gets from fruits, plants, vegetables, animals and other natural sources. This is typically a very easy way for your body to process and absorb the vitamins you are looking for. However, if you do not eat a well balanced diet, your body may be deprived of certain vitamins. Natural vitamin sources may not be adequate in other instances too. For example, you may have an intestinal problem that prevents you from properly absorbing nutrients. If this is the case you may consider supplementing with a vitamin pill to ensure you get your daily allowance of vitamins.

Synthetic vitamin sources

Although some supplemental are derived from natural sources, not all are. Many vitamins, like vitamin C, can be produced synthetically in a laboratory and have exactly the same structure. However, there are vitamins that are not the same, like vitamin E. Vitamin E has two different forms, one that is absorbed and used by the human body and one that is not. In the laboratory, chemists typically produce a vitamin E that is half good vitamin D and half not. What this means to you is that often times the vitamin pills you buy at the drugstore only give your body half the amount of vitamin E as indicated on the label.

Vitamin fillers

Vitamin tablets typically contain a variety of fillers and while some of them are just fine for you, you do need to be on the look out for others, or the risk of overdoing them. Soybean oil is a very common filler and very unhealthy filler found most often in gelcaps. Soybean oil can actually do more harm than the good of the vitamin because it is very high in trans fats (these are the bad fats) and can cause all sorts of heart problems as well as obesity. Another unnecessary filler to be on the lookout for is artificial color. Artificial colors have proven to be carcinogenic and many people are allergic to them too.

Bean & Rice Burgers!

Just thought I would share an alternative burger recipe today!

Bean& Rice Burgers =

1 c Cooked brown rice
1 1/2 c Cooked beans -- pink,
-kidney, navy,
1/2 c Wheat flour (or white)
1 tb Margarine or butter
1 md Onion -- diced
1 Clove garlic -- mashed
1 tb Spike or seasoning salt
-----OPTIONAL-----
1 c Cooked mashed potatoes
1/2 c Cornmeal
1/2 c Bran
1/2 c Cracked wheat
1 sm Pepper -- diced
1 Grated carrot

Heat greased (I use cooking spray) grill or electric frypan on med heat. ***Or, you can grease a 13"x9"glass baking pan and bake at 350* for 30 Min. Just spread mix in pan and cook uncovered. Use a pancake turner to cut and remove cooked 'burger'.*** Mash beans. Add all ingredients and mix well. (If you use all of the ingredients listed your mix may be a bit dry. You might want to add a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of soy, nut, or rice milk. Of coarse you also could use whole milk. Be sure you don't thin it too much or it will be mushy. Look for a 'hamburger' consistency.) Spoon about 2 heaping Tablespoons of mix onto grill or frypan for each burger and flatten with greased pancake turner. Turn several times rather than just once on each side like conventional burgers, they have a better texture that way.

Food Shooping in Kitchener!

If you are on a diet, one of the most important activities you can participate in is food shopping. While on a diet, it is extremely important that you actively participate in buying specific foods to meet your diet needs. Here are some great tips for food shopping.

First off, don’t go shopping on an empty stomach, you will shop with your stomach and not with your head and you will have a shopping cart full of junk food. Always food shop on a full stomach.

When food shopping, always have a plan, either make a list or know what foods you would like to buy. Make sure you read the labels carefully. These days it is the law to state how many calories per serving and how much of these calories are attributed to carbohydrates, protein and fat. You should be able to easily read the nutrition label.

Shop smart, when food shopping, take a look at all your choices and figure out which food is best for you caloric and health wise. You usually have plenty of choices to choose between, and remember that you can easily shed a few pounds per month just by choosing smartly when food shopping. If you are looking to lose weight and eat healthy, make smart choices when you food shop.

How to choose the right personal trainer in Kitchener!

There are several things you need to consider when looking for a personal trainer in Kitchener.

Firstly, you need to ask these 5 important questions:

1.What are your qualifications?

Make sure you ask the trainer about their qualifications and experience to make sure they know what they are doing and you’re in safe hands.

2.Do you keep with current research?

Personal trainers should continually be updating their knowledge by attending seminars, workshops, books, etc., in order to provide you with safe and useful information.

3.Are you available on the time and days I’ve selected?

A Personal Trainer needs to work around you, so you need to make sure they are available to fit into your schedule and give you the expertise and motivation you need to workout efficiently.

4.What is your pricing?

Personal training can cost from as little as $25 up to $100+ per hour, so make sure you choose one that’s within your budget.
Be sure to ask if their rate includes the use of the local gym.
It’s a good idea to find out about the policy on additional fees, contracts, cancellations, and billing procedures.

5.Can you supply client references?

A good personal trainer should have plenty of satisfied customers and won’t hesitate to let you contact them.
You should ask them about the trainer’s strengths and weaknesses, if they were professional, informative, dependable and how well the trainer helped them reach their goal.

Extra Tips:

Determine your fitness goal, whether it is to lose some weight, run a marathon or being able to have enough energy to play with your kids.
This helps narrow down personal trainers based on their experience and field of expertise.

Consider where you want to work out. Location can often determine your selection of trainers. Personal Trainers perform their workouts with you in their studio, local gym or they can even come to you.

Some trainers are willing to train small groups; using this method will reduce your cost.
If you have a friend who has the same goal as you, think about working out together at a reduced price.

After your first workout with your Personal Trainer, ask your self these questions?

1. Will I be able to get along with this trainer and look forward to working with him/her?

2. Does the trainer have good listening skills and communicate well?

3. How motivated does the trainer make you feel?

4. How does your body feel after the session?

Hope the above information helps in your search for a personal trainer, if not you can always contact me! (519-743-4949)

15 Questions About Vitamins All Dieters Should Be Able To Answer Correctly!

At times you can almost see Vitamin C vanishing in a cloud of ectoplasm. Green leafy vegetables wilt at room temperatures, and as they wilt much of the vitamin is lost. Reject limp and wilted vegetables from your produce dealer. Store fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator. Foods that provide their own containers, such as oranges and bananas and potatoes, hold onto their Vitamin C well. The flightiness of Vitamin C makes it advisable to serve it raw whenever possible.

The B vitamins, as well as C, are water soluble, and you get the most out of them by serving the juices they're cooked in. Vitamin Bi is an acidulous little fellow who resents going on the alkaline side; so does Vitamin C. The addition of baking soda to cooking water, as is ' frequently done to preserve the green color of vegetables, causes these vitamins to go to pieces.

Vitamin A is a hairy-chested citizen who can take most anything except long continued high temperatures. Ordinary cooking procedures do hot affect it much, but oxygen will hasten its breakdown, as it will for other vitamins, and therefore closed vessels are advised for cooking when they are practicable. Vitamin G (riboflavin) is water soluble but reasonably immune to cooking losses. Vitamin D can be more or less ignored by the cook.

An ancient and unhonorable superstition holds that commercial canning processes wreak havoc with the vitamins in food. Whatever may have been the case fifty years ago, it just isn't true today.

Foods from modern canning plants, processed in airtight vessels to minimize vitamin destruction, not only compare favorably with fresh foods but in some cases may even be superior in vitamins. Fresh produce bought in open markets during hot weather, for instance, is likely to contain less Vitamin C than foods rushed from the fields to the canning factories. Of course a careless cook can destroy canned vitamins as well as fresh ones.

Innumerable laboratory checkups disclose that canned foods have practically the same Vitamin A value as the corresponding fresh foods. Vitamin B1 is well preserved. There is a slight sacrifice of Vitamin C, although foods of an acid nature, such as tomatoes, grapefruit, orange and grapefruit juice, when canned by modern methods, are nearly as rich in Vitamin C as fresh foods available in city markets.

There is a strain of frigidity running through the vitamins. They don't resent being chilled and wrapped in cartons that come to us as quick-frozen foods. But they are a little nervous and eager to escape when the package thaws. You'd feel the same way about it if you were kept below zero for a few days.

How Well Do You Know Your Vitamins?
Don't allow frozen food to kibitz in the kitchen until it is completely defrosted-unless, of course, you are serving it raw. Store the package in the coldest compartment of your refrigerator and when you are ready to cook it, plunge it immediately into boiling water.

Ready for a little quiz about vitamins?
Unless you can answer at least 10 of the following questions it is probable that you are not getting full vitamin-value out of your food dollars.

1. What colors usually indicate good Vitamin A values in vegetables?

2. How should frozen fruits and vegetables be prepared for eating?

3. Are the vitamins you buy in a drug store the same as those you obtain in foods?

4. Why are boiled foods likely to be low in Vitamin B values ?

5. Are canned foods good sources of vitamins?

6. What is the outstanding vitamin value of citrus fruits and juices?

7. If it is difficult for you to find your seat in a darkened movie theatre, what vitamin deficiency may be indicated ?

8. Are constipation and lack of appetite ever aided by increased vitamin intake?

9. Are the white inner leaves of lettuce, cabbage, etc.,as rich in vitamins as the coarser outer leaves?

10. Why is it recommended that at least one raw fruit or vegetable be eaten every day?

11. ARE THE IMPORTANT B VITAMINS STORED IN YOUR BODY IF
YOU CONSUME A SURPLUS?

12. What is meant by "fortified" or "restored" foods, in reference to vitamins?

13. Does an expectant mother require more vitamins than she otherwise would?

14. What vitamin is important in preventing rickets in children?

15. Is there any danger of your diet providing too many vitamins?

Answers
1. Green and yellow. 2. Vegetables, plunged into water before thawing; fruits to be consumed raw, thawed just before using. 3. Yes, except that foods may provide other undiscovered vitamins. 4. They are soluble and likely to be thrown out with the water. 5. Yes. 6. Vitamin C. 7. Vitamin A. 8. Yes, by Vitamin B1 (thiamin). 9. No, white leaves are low in vitamins. 10. Because of Vitamin C content, easily destroyed by cooking. 11. Not in any significant amount. 12. Fortified foods contain more vitamins than normal; restored foods have vitamins added to make up for normal values lost in processing. 13. Yes. 14. Vitamin D. 15. None whatever; massive doses of pure vitamin D may be toxic .

Relief for Knee Pain!

Have you ever had a knee injury? Knee injuries are quite painful and people suffering from such a condition will immediately look for effective pain relief. Your knees are one of the most important body parts. If you encounter repetitive knee injuries or accidents, you should know about the various techniques to ease the pain.

When you encounter any injury or accident, you must attend to it at once. You can use this technique which is more popularly known as RICE. ‘R’ stands for rest. You need to take a rest after you’ve cleaned the wound or injury. Place your legs in a relaxing position. ‘I’ stands for ice. Put ice over your knees. ‘C’ is for compression and it is important when you have a knee accident. ‘E’ stands for elevation so don’t forget to elevate them as well.

A lot of pressure is exerted on the knees so you need to ensure that when you have a knee accident, the pressure is removed. Rest is vital if you want to relieve pain. Don’t even try to put your knees at work. Blood flow should be slowed down and you can do this by placing ice over the affected area. By doing so, you can reduce swelling. Get some bandage and put it over the injury. Don’t make it too tight. The healing process is also promoted through elevation. Try elevating your knees and you will notice that there is less pain.

Repetitive injuries can cause progressive pain. You can get rid of the pain by taking pain relievers. Ointments and creams are also available without doctor’s prescription. Again, don’t remove the bandages because it will help in stabilizing your knees. The discomfort is already part of the injury but you can still reduce it to moderate by taking medicines.

You will need immediate professional assistance once you meet a knee injury. Consult an orthopedic expert or a pharmacist so that you will know what to do. Don’t take medicines without a doctor’s supervision because it might worsen your condition. The orthopedic physician can teach you effective exercises and methods that can ease the pain of the injury. It may take a while before you can exert pressure on your knees again but it’s worth the wait; if you put your knees at rest, complete healing can come sooner. Always follow the doctor’s instructions and if you need to take medicines, take them on time and at the right dosage.

You can’t do your routine activities if have a knee injury so make sure that you recover from it as soon as possible. Thanks to the modern technology of today, there are now countless medicines (natural and conventional), techniques, and other procedures that can speed up healing.

Affected individuals should also be determined to get well. If you think positively and you’re doing everything to get rid of the pain, you will gain positive results. Your brain tells you when you’re in pain and to some individuals it’s all in the mind. While you’re trying to recover from the injury, don’t think too much about the pain because it will only get worse. Watch a movie, read a book, etc. but make sure that you maintain a resting position. If you don’t exert pressure on your knees, your knees will be in shape once more.

How To Use A Pilates Mini Ball!

A Pilates mini ball is a very inexpensive piece of exercise equipment that can help you do many exercises. While it isn’t necessary to have one to do Pilates or any type of workout, a Pilates mini ball can help make certain exercises more efficient.

Using a ball in your workout can help you focus on muscles that you might otherwise neglect. Because you often have to concentrate on holding the ball between your knees or squeezing it while making movements, it makes you more aware of the muscles you’re using.

A variety of exercises have been developed by Pilates experts to help you use a Pilates mini ball properly and get the most from the exercises. There are routines designed for Pilates beginners specifically that use the ball to make the new exerciser more aware of certain muscles and movements. Intermediate routines are more of a challenge, while advanced workouts use the ball to really go deep into those core muscles.

To start using a Pilates mini ball, try some basic exercises like these:

• Stand about an arm’s length away from the wall, and hold the ball between your hands. Put the ball against the wall and lean into it, letting your elbows bend, then push yourself back.
• Lie on the floor with your knees bent and the ball between your ankles. Hold the ball there as you straighten your legs and bend them slowly.
• Or do something as simple as sit in a chair with the ball between your thighs. Use your thigh muscles to squeeze the ball slowly and relax.

If you’ll do those exercises regularly, just 10 times each, you’ll soon start to feel and see a difference in those muscle groups.

You might be wondering what the benefit of using the ball might be in an exercise like the wall push-up listed above. Couldn’t you just stand and put your hands on the wall to do the same thing?

Yes, of course you could. And you’d still benefit from the exercises. You could tone your arms that way. But using a ball gives the exercise more intensity. Because you’re leaning against a round somewhat malleable ball, you have to constantly correct your balance to keep the ball from rolling. You use tiny muscles in ways that you don’t normally use them when you use a ball.

You can use a Pilates mini ball for a variety of exercises. Just incorporate it into things you normally do. The added bit of resistance and the requirement of balancing yourself will add another layer to your workouts.

Another nice thing about a Pilates ball is that even if you buy one made specifically for Pilates, they’re relatively inexpensive. And if you want to go even cheaper, just buy a child’s ball that’s around the same size—about the size of a soccer ball. If you have kids, you might have the perfect Pilates mini ball already waiting for you in a closet or your child’s toy box.

Battle Spring Fever with these Outdoor Exercises!

Every year we spend the winter cooped up where it’s warm. When spring rolls around, we can’t wait to get outside. Getting outdoors can not only battle spring fever, it can also get you up and moving. Exercising outdoors can give you a better workout and burn more calories than the machines at the gym. As spring approaches, if you want to get outdoors and get in shape, here are some great activities you can do.

* Walking. Not only is walking a great way to get some fresh air and sunshine after being cooped up all winter, it’s also great exercise if you do it right. For an optimal workout, walk for an hour a day at least three days a week. You should also alter your pace during the walk, i.e. go as fast as you can for a minute, then a slower pace for a minute, etc. This will get your heart pumping without having to do a hard workout. If you’re bored of walking around your neighborhood, why not visit a nature park or zoo.

* Yoga. Sure, nowadays yoga is done in your living room or in a gym, but this art was made to be done in the great outdoors. So tote your yoga mat to the park or just to the backyard. This can give you a workout and calm your nerves at the same time.

* Swimming. Want to get a fantastic full body workout while your kids are playing? Then take them down to the community pool. Many pools have an area for kids to splash and play while the adults swim laps. Just make sure not to leave any child that doesn’t know how to swim without adult supervision. And when you’re done with your laps, maybe you can splash and play with your kids too.

* Volleyball. This sport doesn’t have to be played inside with a ref; you can play at a sand volleyball court, or just set up a net in your back yard. Volleyball is a great way to socialize with your friends, or to meet new people by joining a league.

* Biking. More and more cities and towns are putting in bike paths. These are a
great way to get a work out without risking serious injury by biking on rough terrain. However, if you’re up for a challenge, there are probably paths through woods, hills, mountains, or some other difficult, but rewarding terrain. Just be sure to wear proper safety equipment no matter where you’re biking.

* Hiking. If you want to get out and go, and you’re up for an adventure, why don’t you take the family and go for a hike. You can experience nature, get a great workout, get some fresh air, and spend some quality bonding time with your family.

So what are you waiting for? Get out of your artificial lighting and into the great outdoors for a workout and a fun time too.

Cut Out the Empty Calories!

One of the easiest ways to shed the pounds is to cut out empty calories. Many of us don’t realize that the amount of empty calories we consume add to up to a few extra pounds each month. If you drop the empty calories you can easily lose 2 or 3pounds per month. Here are some tips on cutting out the empty calories.

Empty calories are foods or drinks we consume that do not contain any important vitamins, minerals or fiber, they usually contain only fat or processed sugar. One of the biggest empty calorie culprits is soda. Soda has sometimes 140 to 160 calories per 12 oz. serving. Many people easily drink about 3 to 4 12 oz. servings a day. That is 600 calories of wasted calories per day, which translates close to 5 pounds a month. Choose diet soda, water or fresh juices. There are so many other ways that you can use these calories instead of wasting them on sugar water.

If you enjoy processed food such as TV dinners, chips, cookies and other snack food, you can be taking in 1,000’s of calories, which you really don’t need. Instead, eat healthy snacks such as fresh fruit and whole grains. You can lose a few pounds just by cutting out the junk food each month. If you are looking for a super simple way to shed the pounds and eat healthier, cut out the empty calories.

Menopause And Weight Gain!

Talking to most women over 50 you will quickly find that menopause and weight gain are linked in their experience. It is very common to put on weight at this time and while some of this may be due to lifestyle changes, that does not explain why suddenly we develop a tendency to put on weight at different parts of the body, especially the abdomen, while any weight gained when we were younger tended to be centered on the hips.

The truth is that hormonal changes do have a part to play in this, although the process is not completely understood. At menopause a woman stops ovulating, her monthly menstruation periods end, and her body produces much lower levels of the female hormone estrogen which is responsible for the ovulation process. Low estrogen has been shown to cause weight gain in animals and it almost certainly is the reason why our bodies change shape. While women of childbearing age store fat in the lower body, after the menopause they store it on the abdomen instead, like men. This leads to a greater risk of heart disease.

At the same time, both men and women tend to find muscle turning to fat as they grow older, and the metabolism slows down. This means that if you do not adjust your eating habits you will probably find that your weight increases. A person of 60 just does not need as many calories as a person of 40.

Hormone therapy with estrogen is sometimes prescribed to control menopausal symptoms. Many women will be surprised to hear that studies have shown that hormone therapy does not cause weight gain. Some women experience bloating and water retention in the early stages of hormone therapy but this is usually temporary and they have not gained any fat. Hormone therapy can reduce the risk of heart disease by preventing the changes in storage of body fat around the abdomen and lowering cholesterol. However, hormone therapy has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in some studies.

If you find that you are gaining weight around the menopause, there are several things you can do.

- Eat a healthy, low fat diet with plenty of fiber, avoiding sugar.

- Take regular exercise. As people get older their physical activity levels naturally drop. Work often becomes less physically demanding, there are no kids to run around after, we take less active holidays and do things more slowly. 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day will help to balance out the effect of this.

- Maintain your muscle strength and mass. Use weights for arm muscles and walking or cycling for legs.

- Accept the changes to the shape of your body. If you are not overweight, but simply have a thicker waist and slimmer legs, that is fine.

Consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program if you have any medical conditions or your fitness levels are low. Your doctor can also help with symptoms of the menopause and weight gain.
